Balayage & Foiling

Adding highlights or lowlights to your natural hair colour is an effective way of uplifting your hair and refreshing your look by introducing variation and texture. We offer several different techniques, including free hand technique or in foils, depending on the effect you want to achieve.

Foiling

Foil is used to separate out the strands of hair to be coloured, and the lightener is applied using a brush. The foil is then folded and the colour is left to develop. This is also effective for lowlights, where a darker colour is applied to certain strands of hair.

Balayage

The colour is painted freehand onto strands of hair, without foils, with particular attention paid to the mid-lengths and ends. The results can be more subtle than foiling, for a natural, sun-kissed look.

During your initial consultation, we will take the time to understand what kind of look you want, and explain the differences in process and results.

Balayage Frequently asked questions

“Balayage is the process of transitioning from dark at the roots to lighter on the ends. This freehand colouring technique results in a more natural-looking highlight effect.”
How you pronounce balayage can changing depending on where you’re from. We pronounce it ‘bal-ay-arge’.
The length of time it takes to do balayage can depend on hair length. The entire process can usually take between 3-4 hours.
There are a few differences between ombre and balayage. Balayage is more of a vertical technique, whereas ombre is horizontal. Ombre is also a style in itself, whereas balayage is a hair-styling technique.
Balayage can last for up to four months because it doesn’t require as much upkeep as traditional colouring. The colour will last until it’s grown out, or when the lighter tone becomes lower and needs to be brought back up.
Balayage is a hair colouring technique where a graduated and natural-looking highlight effect is achieved through painting hair colour onto your hair. It comes from the French word ‘balayer’, which means ‘to sweep’.
Balayage is a relatively low-maintenance hair technique, but you will still need to maintain it. Use products without silicone, sulphates, and parabens, and a purple shampoo between shampooing to help tone the warmth out of your hair. It’s also recommended that you come back for a toner 4 weeks after your balayage has been done to help maintain the colour.

Foiling frequently asked questions

Foiling hair is the process of weaving out sections of hair and either lightening or darkening it in foil packets. The foils are placed close to the scalp to lighten the hair from root to end.
Both foilyage and balayage involve painting colour onto sections of your hair. The difference between the two is that with foilyage, the painted hair is wrapped in foils. This process means that dye can reach all hair surface, rather than just one side.
How long foiling hair takes can depend on many things, like hair thickness, hair length, and the number of foils. It can take anywhere between 15 minutes to two hours to place the foils, and extra time for styling and cutting.
Foiling is only bad for your hair if the stylist places it incorrectly. Using the wrong products or placement technique may also negatively affect your hair.
