If you have found yourself wondering what are hair extensions, then you have come to the right place. We have all the information you can possibly need.
What are hair extensions?
Hair extensions are separate pieces of hair on wefts, tapes, glue or beads that you can blend into your own hair. They are designed to help add length and fullness to your natural hair.
Hair extensions are available in a variety of different styles, materials and colours for you to choose from.
What are the different types of hair extensions?
There are a variety of different hair extensions available. What you choose will depend on how long you want your extensions to last and how you want them to perform. Your options are:
1. Clip-in hair extensions
2. Tape-in hair extensions
3. Sew in hair extensions
4. Fusion and pre-bonded hair extensions
5. Microlink or micro bead hair extensions
All of the different types of hair extensions are available as either real hair or synthetic hair.
At Lux Hair Lounge as experienced hair stylists, Tape-in hair extensions are the safest semi-permanent method on the market.
Beads and wefts if applied incorrectly can cause stress on the hair if applied too tight and can also cause blisters on the scalp.
We have seen some of our guests visit the Lux Hair salon after utilising these methods of hair extensions, causing extreme breakage especially from the beads.
When tapes are applied, they sit lightly on a section of hair and sit naturally against the scalp. The glue isn’t damaging to the hair.
How to clip in extensions in 7 steps
Clip-in hair extensions are easy and fast to apply once you’ve had a bit of practice. Clips are attached at the base of the extensions and are ready to be used straight away.
Step 1. Begin by brushing your hair out thoroughly to ensure that there are no knots or tangles.
Step 2. Section out a thin section of your own hair at the base of your neck. Clip up the rest of your hair to keep it out of the way. Take an extension with 3 clips that fit into the sectioned off hair.
Position the extension at the centre of the section and using the middle clip, secure the extension as close to the roots of your hair as possible.
Once the middle clip is secure, clip in the left and right clips ensuring that the weft has been pulled taught and isn’t bunching.
Step 3. Let your hair down and then section off a thin line of hair approximately an inch above the first clipped extension. This section should be level with the top of your ears.
Taking the smaller weft with 4 clips (7 inches) repeat the process in step 2 to secure the extension in your hair.
Step 4. You will now want to use the larger extension with 4 clips (8 inches). Separating a thin section of hair at approximately the widest part of your head clip up your hair and secure the extensions, again as in step 2.
Step 5. Separate a thin section of hair just below the crown of your head and clip your hair out of the way. Insert the second 3 clip weft, following the instructions in Step 2.
Step 6. You now want to insert the final extensions into the sides of your hair for more volume. Section off your hair about 2 inches above your ear and insert the first 2 clip weft close to your hairline. Repeat with the second 2 clip weft on the opposite side.
Step 7. Finally, you will insert a 1 clip weft right above the 2 clip weft on both sides of your head.
Brush out your hair one final time and check in the mirror to make sure that none of the extensions are visible, especially at the back.
How long does it take to clip in hair extensions?
Hair extensions can be clipped into your hair in about 5 to 10 minutes. Once you know how to secure the extensions in the right spot, you can clip them in in just a few short minutes.
Everything you need to know about hair extensions
The world of hair extensions can seem endless. If you want to know what are hair extensions and you’re looking for some quick, useful facts then take a look at the information below.
We have everything you need to know about hair extensions and how they can be worn.
What are the best hair extensions for me?
The best hair extensions for you will depend on a number of factors such as hair length and thickness.
Tape hair extensions are some of the best hair extensions for short hair. Tape hair extensions are lightweight and inconspicuous so are a great option for anyone who has short hair. They’re easier to hide and look natural.
Halo hair extensions are a fantastic option for anyone with fine hair. Due to the fact that they don’t glue or bond into your natural hair, there is a much lower chance that they will cause any damage.
Halo hair extensions are a great way to add extra volume and length to fine hair. Tape hair extensions are also a great option for anyone with fine hair.
How much do hair extensions cost?
The cost of hair extensions will vary depending on the type and quality that you choose. For a set of premium salon quality extensions, you can expect your extensions to start at around $499 and range up to $699+ depending on if you require extra packets or want to include a colour service as well.
Synthetic hair extensions are generally a bit cheaper than real hair extensions, but they won’t blend as seamlessly as premium salon quality real hair extensions will.
How long do hair extensions last?
High-quality hair extensions can last anywhere from 3-6 months or longer, depending on how well you take care of them and how often you wear them.
Clip-in extensions that you can take in and out will last a lot longer, especially if you don’t wear them every day, take good care of them and store them properly.
Do hair extensions damage your hair?
Different types of hair extensions are going to have different effects on your hair. Some of the more semi-permanent hair extensions can cause damage to your hair on removal due to pulling, glueing or bonding as these extensions are attached directly to strands of your hair.
However, the general consensus is that hair extensions such as clip-in extensions do not damage your hair if they are fitted properly by a professional.
Clip-in hair extensions are brilliant options if you want the look of longer, fuller hair without the risk of damaging your hair.
How do I style hair extensions?
Hair extensions are great as they can be styled in a number of different ways.
Whether you want to wear your hair down or tie it up, hair extensions can be styled in almost any way that normal hair can be styled.
Whether your preference is a ponytail, bun or big bouncy curls, the styling options are endless.
Can I curl and straighten hair extensions?
Yes, you can curl and straighten some types of hair extensions! Hair extensions that are made out of real human hair can be heat treated and styled just like your normal hair.
If you are planning to blow dry, curl or straighten your hair extensions, we recommend using a lower heat setting to make sure that you don’t accidentally damage your extensions by using too much heat.
If I have curly hair can I still wear clip in hair extensions?
Yes, you can still wear hair extensions even if you have naturally curly hair!
While hair extensions will come straight, like normal hair, they can be curled to match your own hair once they have been attached.
If you want a heat-free way to curl your new extensions, you can wash and braid your hair overnight and sleep with it like that.
Come morning your extensions will be beautifully curled and will blend into your natural curls well, all without applying an ounce of heat.
How long does my hair have to be to wear hair extensions?
Generally, we can use extensions on shorter length hair to create a new style.
For example, we can use hair extensions to the sides of a concave cut to emphasise the length at the front. We can also use hair extensions on longer hair.
Will hair extensions blend if I have short hair?
We recommend that your hair be at least 7-8 inches long (or approximately shoulder length) for your extensions to blend seamlessly with your natural hair.
Too much shorter and you will have a hard time hiding the wefts in your hair.
Can I dye/colour my hair extensions?
Yes, you can dye or colour your real hair extensions!
We recommend utilising the services of experienced professionals if you do decide to colour your extensions though as they will be able to properly tone and match the extensions to your natural hair.
Can I sleep with my hair extensions in?
We don’t suggest sleeping with your clip-in extensions as it is easy to tangle them and cause unintentional damage.
Clip-ins are easy to clip in and remove so it is a good idea to get into a habit of removing them for bed.
They will last much longer if you take the time to take them out for sleep.
Can I swim with hair extensions?
We do not recommend swimming with hair extensions as chlorine from the pool and salt from the ocean water can cause irreversible damage to your extensions.
It’s always a good idea to remove your hair extensions before swimming, otherwise tie your hair up and avoid getting it wet.
You should try to avoid getting your extensions wet at all except for when you are washing them.
Can I play sports with hair extensions?
We recommend avoiding any high sweat activity when you are wearing your extensions. Sweat can lead to their deterioration as sweat is salty and acidic.
This can lead to your extensions drying out as well as excessive tangling and matting which causes further damage.
If you play a lot of sport take your extensions out while you are playing and simply reattach them once you have washed your hair.
This will help to ensure that your hair extensions last for a long time.
What products can I use on hair extensions?
Choosing the right products for your extensions is important to help prolong their life.
Alcohol and sulphate can dry out extensions so we recommend alcohol-free and sulphate free shampoos and conditioners when washing them.
If possible, organic hair products are a great choice as well.
We would recommend seeing your hairstylist as the most Professional product ranges have a sulphate free range suitable for extensions.
Showpony a brand that Lux Hair Lounge utilises, have their very own Hair Extension shampoo and conditioner.
How to wash and dry hair extensions?
If you’re wondering how to wash hair extensions, they do not need to be washed often as they do not receive natural oils from your scalp as your natural hair does.
As a general rule of thumb, the less you wash your extensions, the longer they will last.
We recommend clients with tape-in to gently wash the scalp and allow the shampoo to flow over the extensions in the shower, do not scrub to avoid matting.
How to brush hair extensions?
Brushing your hair extensions is easy.
We recommend brushing them before and after use with a paddle brush or a detangling brush.
If they become snagged or tangled while you’re wearing them throughout the day give them another quick brush to keep them looking tidy and help to prolong their life.
How do hair extensions work?
Hair extensions work by attaching natural or synthetic hair to your natural hair in a number of different ways.
They can be attached to your hair with clips, glue, adhesives or beads to produce hair that looks fuller and longer.
How to remove hair extensions
The advice for how to remove hair extensions will depend on the kind of extensions that you have.
Clip-in extensions can be removed by yourself in the comfort of your own home.
For other semi-permanent types of hair extensions, such as Tape-in or bead hair extensions, it is best to get the help of a professional when you decide it’s time to remove them.
Incorrect removal can cause damage to your natural hair that could take a long time to fix.
Choosing the right hair extensions for you
In summary, the right hair extensions for you will depend on what kind of wear you have in mind.
If you are looking for some high-quality extensions that you can wear daily or on special occasions, that won’t damage your hair, then clip-in extensions are a great option.
If you want semi-permanent extensions that are worn consistently for a more permanent look, tape-in extensions could be the right product for you.
